U.S. Market

U.S. stocks rose, completing the second straight weekly gain for the
Standard & Poor’s 500 Index, as Google Inc. and Seagate Technology Plc
fueled a rally in technology shares that helped offset a decline in bank
shares and an unexpected drop in consumer confidence.

Confidence among U.S. consumers unexpectedly declined in October, with
Americans more pessimistic about current economic conditions. The Thomson
Reuters/University of Michigan preliminary index of consumer sentiment
decreased to 67.9, the lowest since July, from 68.2 in September. Economists
estimated an October reading of 68.9, according to the median forecast in a
Bloomberg News survey.

Retail sales in the U.S. climbed more than forecast in September, easing
concern that unemployment stuck near a 26-year high will bring the recovery
to a halt.

European stocks rose for a second week as minutes from last month’s Federal
Reserve meeting showed U.S. officials were prepared to ease monetary policy
further.

Japan Market

Japanese benchmark stock indexes retreated from the biggest gains in a month
the day before after the yen rose to a 15-year high, damping exporters’
profit outlooks. Banks dropped after a report they will sell

high.

discourage speculation and prevent asset bubbles in the fastest-growing
major economy.

seven straight weekly gains to sell, and after a report on U.S. jobless
claims renewed concern over the strength of a global economic recovery.

Emerging Markets

Brazil’s Bovespa stock index climbed for a fifth day, completing the
longest stretch of weekly gains since May 2009, as utilities rallied on
speculation Jose Serra may win the presidential election, boosting the
