U.S. Market

U.S. stocks fell, extending a second straight weekly decline for major benchmarks, as a drop in commodities pulled oil and metals producers down amid concern the economic rebound may be flagging.

European Market

European stocks posted the biggest weekly decline in seven weeks as economic reports from the U.S. and Japan heightened concern that the global economic recovery may be stalling.

Japan Market

Japanese stocks dropped, sending benchmark gauges to their second weekly decline, after U.S. jobless claims unexpectedly increased and a measure of manufacturing in the Philadelphia area fell.

Asia / Pacific Market

Asian stocks fell, with the region’s benchmark index dropping for the first time in six days, as concern of slowing demand dragged down shares of Sharp Corp. and Billabong International Ltd.

Taiwan’s Taiex index was little changed. EVA Airways Corp. gained to the highest since June 18, 2008, after CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets analysts Tay Her Lim and Anita Chen raised the 12-month share-price estimate.

Taiwan’s export orders increased for a 10th straight month in July in a sign demand for the island’s microchips and displays is weathering global economic risks.

South Korea’s Kospi index fell but rose over the week. Hyundai Securities Co., a South Korean brokerage, retreated, the most since Jan. 13. The company plans to bid for a stake creditors are selling in Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., according to a filing. Hyundai Securities affiliates Hyundai Elevator Co. and Hyundai Merchant Marine Co. earlier disclosed plans to join the bid for the South Korean builder.

Sales at South Korea’s major department stores increased in July for a 17th month amid an economic recovery.

China/ Hong Kong Market

China’s stocks fell, paring a weekly gain for the benchmark index, as investors speculated inflation will delay monetary easing and provisions for local-government loans will erode bank profits.

Hong Kong stocks fell, completing the benchmark index’s second straight week of losses, as speculation China will maintain policies aimed at curbing asset bubbles and an unexpected increase in U.S. jobless claims fuelled concern about the outlook for global growth.

Hong Kong’s inflation cooled to the slowest pace in seven months in July because of one-off government payments of public housing rentals.

Emerging Markets

Brazil’s Bovespa stock index fell for a second day, paring a weekly advance, as commodities dropped on concern the global economic recovery may falter.

Bond Market

Treasury 10-year notes headed for a fourth weekly gain, the longest run since February, on signs global economic growth is slowing, increasing the refuge appeal of the world’s most easily traded securities.
