U.S. Market

U.S. stocks advanced, sending the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index to the biggest weekly gain since March, after National Semiconductor Corp. spurred a rally in technology shares that helped the market overcome the largest drop in American retail sales since September.

The U.S. government posted a smaller budget deficit in May than forecast as a growing economy helped bring in more tax revenue.

Sales at U.S. retailers unexpectedly dropped in May for the first time in eight months, indicating the rebound in consumer spending is cooling as Americans boost savings.

European Market

European stocks advanced as a report showed confidence among U.S. consumers rose to the highest level in more than two years, boosting optimism that the world’s biggest economy can withstand the sovereign debt crisis.

Japan Market

Japanese stocks gained on optimism the global recovery will be sustained after the European Central Bank raised its growth forecast and said it will continue buying bonds to ease the region’s debt crisis.

Asia / Pacific Market

Asian stocks rose to a one-week high on an increased estimate of technology spending and a gauge of bond risk declined after the European Central Bank said it will extend measures to battle the region’s debt crisis.

Taiwan’s Taiex index rose. Acer Inc. gained. The company, which overtook Hewlett-Packard Co. as the world’s largest laptop vendor last quarter, said in an exchange filing May revenue rose to NT$50 billion from a year earlier.

South Korea’s Kospi index rose. Shipbuilders: Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., the world’s biggest shipbuilder added. Samsung Heavy Industries Co. and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. advanced. The shares rose on speculation they may raise prices to offset a stronger currency and higher material costs.

China/ Hong Kong Market

China’s stocks rose, capping a weekly gain, as higher-than-estimated loan growth and retail sales added to evidence the world’s third-largest economy is withstanding Europe’s debt crisis.

China’s inflation accelerated in May to the quickest pace in 19 months, highlighting overheating risks in the fastest-growing major economy.

Hong Kong stocks rose, lifting the benchmark index to its third straight weekly gain, after China reported higher-than-estimated loan growth, and the European Central Bank raised its economic growth forecast.

Emerging Markets

Brazil’s Bovespa stock index rose and had the biggest weekly gain in two months after economic reports from China bolstered the global growth outlook and Itau Unibanco Holding SA advised buying the nation’s stocks.

Bond Market

Treasuries rose, pushing the 10-year note’s yield down the most in a week, as U.S. retail sales unexpectedly dropped last month, encouraging demand for the relative safety of U.S. government debt.
